Living our faith is what being a Catholic is all
about. Key to living our faith is the central gathering place we use to
worship as a community – our church. At St. Joseph’s, we take great pride
in our parish and its origins 50 years ago.
In the quiet peace which
followed the second World War, a small but determined group of Catholics in the
Aston area petitioned Cardinal Dougherty’s office to have a new parish
established in Green Ridge. In the summer of 1947, the Cardinal granted their
wish and sent Father James A. Donnelly to be the first pastor of the new church
which was to be named St. Joseph.
With no church or rectory, but
with a lot of energy and determination, Father Donnelly and his new parishioners
of about 60 families set out to raise the money necessary to build a church.
Celebrating their early Masses in Grange Hall in nearby St. Francis de Sales
parish, the small but dedicated group sponsored card parties, bingo and cake
sales to raise money for their dream. Father Donnelly traveled throughout the
diocese Sunday after Sunday to make appeals for contributions to St. Joseph’s
Church.
On November 8, 1949 their hard
work paid off and his Excellency J. Carroll McCormick, D.D., Auxiliary
Bishop of Philadelphia, officiated at the laying of the cornerstone and the
dedication of St. Joseph’s Church on its present Concord Road site. Once
established, the little parish in Aston grew to become the religious and
educational center for thousands of Catholics in the area.
On September 16, 2001, we
entered a new era for our parish community with the dedication of our new
church. Now that we have completed the new church structure, we continue
the work of our faith to build up our inner church.
It is our mission that
everyone will find comfort, peace and prayerfulness in our Church and grow
together as a community of faith. When all is said and done that is what
we are about – love of God and one another.
